"A hymn is not just an excuse for music; a hymn is a message. It is a philosophy that helps people just as much as fresh air, sunshine or any of the other vital things of life."
-- Edward MacHugh, Radio Artist, "Your Gospel Singer", N.B.C.
"The gospel hymns' forthright testimony of God's transforming power is as fresh as water from the mountain spring, and as refreshing."
-- George W. Sanville, Author. "Forty Gospel Hymn Stories", December, 1943
"Hymns deepen and widen revival in a person's heart."
-- Bishop Arthur J. Moore, Methodist Church
REVIVAL: Renewed attention to, or interest in something
Fanny Crosby was a blind woman who wrote over 8,000 hymns. The words of her songs speak of the Savior she could see.
The hymns were written during times of distress -- • the great depression • wars • death of loved ones, etc.
Precious Lord, Take My Hand was written by a pastor whose wife died during childbirth.
God Understands was written by Dr. Oswald J. Smith for his sister, Mrs. Bicker, whose missionary husband was instantly killed in an automobile accident. She became a widow at 26 years old with two young children to care for.
Does Jesus Care? was written by Rev. Frank E. Graeff. He had suffered the feeling of being abandoned as trial after trial tested his faith, and burden upon burden was laid upon his shoulders. (This song was taught to me by a pastor with liver and colon cancer).
"You surround me with songs of victory"
Psalm 32:7
